Over the course of last weekend Banbridge Hockey Club had seven players representatives at the Under 21 Interprovincials in Cork. Five of the squad( Philip Brown, Scott Forbes, Owen Magee, Matthew Bell and Steven Dowds) had been selected for the Ulster under 21 side while two, Peter Brown and Ben Cosgrove played for an Irish Under 18 panel.

Ulster defeated Munster on day one by two goals to nil with Owen Magee scoring one of the goals while the Irish squad drew one all with Leinster. On the Sunday morning Ulster and Ireland played out an entertaining two all draw with Steven Dowds getting both for Ulster while Ben Cosgrove got on the score sheet for the Under 18′s.

The final two matches on Monday saw Ulster needing a draw to win the Interprovincial title. Leinster scored twice mostly against the run of play and it looked as if the competition was all but over but two goals in five second half minutes from Steven Dowds and Owen Magee meant that the title seemed to be heading North. However, Leinster scored a scrappy winner in the final minutes to steal the title. In the final match the Irish Under 18′s defeated Munster five goals to two.

Another Premier League Hockey season drew to a close last weekend when Banbridge played Annadale in a match that would have no impact on the home teams league position of third athough a win would enable Annadale to secure fourth place and automatic Irish Hockey League participation next season.

Bann started without the services of new father Ross McCandless who picked up an injury training earlier in the week and the home defence was dealt another blow after five minutes when an unwell Philip Brown had to leave the pitch. Annadale obviously intented to press hard for the win as they started the match at an incredible pace with Peter Caruth at the heart of all their attacking play. It was he who opened the score when he found himself in space in the right of the Bann circle and beat the onrushing Gareth Lennox with a well placed reverse stick shot.

Bann having started slowly began to show themselves as an attacking force with Owen Magee and Dane Ward prominent pressing the visiting keeper into a couple of smart saves.

Midway throught the half Bann contrived to miss place passses in the centre of the pitch and were punished on two occasions when Annadale extended their lead to three. It must be said that the scoreline did not reflect the pattern of play with the visitors converting three of the four chances they created.

Half Time : Bann 0 Annadale 3

Following a stern halftime talk from coaches Mark Tumilty and Errol Lutton the home team emerged a different side, upping the pace of play and passing the ball with more speed and authority. Five minutes into the half Bann where awarded a penalty corner which Steven Dowds dragged low and hard to the keepers right.

Annadale were now finding it almost impossible to get out of their own half as Bann poured forward time and again looking for a second goal to give themselves a chance of getting at least a point out of the match. However, some poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the home forwards at bay.

As the half progressed it became apparent that no matter what the locals did they where destined not to score. In the final few minutes they again won several penalty corners but failed to convert any of these. On the final whistle Bann got their second when following the breakdown of penalty corner Matthew Bell crossed on the reverse for Scott Forbes to deflect home.

All in all it was a very entertaining match which the locals probably deserved to get something out off, but failure to convert chances cost them dear. Best for Bann on the day where Matthew Bell and Peter Brown.

Bann having finished third in the league now turn their attention to the defence of the IHL trophy, won at Lisnagarvey last May, when they entertain Instonians on 14th April at Havelock Park with a 6pm start. This match will hopefully be preceded by both mini hockey and a veterans match. More details will follow next week.

Team: G. Lennox, M.Bell, S. Forbes, S. Forbes, P.Brown, D. Carlisle, P. Brown, B. McCandless, O.Magee, S. Dowds, D.Ward, B. Cosgrove, S. Caruth, P.Brown, J. Moffett, C. Dowds

It’s two days after the Irish men’s Olympic hockey dream was dashed cruelly with 2 seconds to go in a historic Olympic Qualifying final in Dublin – and it still hurts. Ireland was playing the fancied Korean’s – ranked 6th in the world, and the underdog story has captured the imagination of any who has learnt of it. Korea took the lead for the first time in the match, with 2 seconds to go before the final whistle, and thus won 3-2. Ireland had recently been promoted to 16th in the world (up from 18th ) after an impressive progression that culminated in an incredible 2011 Summer, which included positive results against Australia (1st), Spain (5th) and Korea themselves.

In any elite sport in the world, to jump 10 world ranking places in form and to play at that level consistently is almost unheard of. Countries simply don’t usually category jump upwards like this, and when they do, it is typically the result of a massive cash injection. So how did the Irish men’s hockey team do it? And does the heartbreaking loss mean the end of their fairy tale rise to the top of world hockey?

The architect of this surge of performance is the former South African hockey coach, Paul Revington, who is ably assisted by a former Malaysian international Arul Anthoni. These two men have bought Ireland’s technical and tactical ability to a razor’s edge and piece by piece have developed the “Green Machine” beyond recognition. Other key elements are the rest of the permanent support staff and the numerous experts Revington has invited into the camp to add their unique skill sets and insights, including the significant role that Revington’s wife Sandy plays in adding value in multiple areas and supplying continuous unstinting support.

And then of course there are the players themselves. There has been a squad of 40 plus players who have committed to this goal, with the full knowledge that only 16 could attend an Olympic Games. Each player committed to pushing themselves and each other to give themselves the best chance of making this happen. Incredible stuff. Not only have they dared to dream big, they have taken big and consistent action in relation to their dream. They have made significant personal sacrifices and life choices that have given them a better chance at their audacious goal – to be the first Irish hockey team ever to qualify for the Olympic Games. These sacrifices including almost all of the team who played in this tournament leaving Ireland to play in the elite hockey leagues of Europe, to ensure they were training and competing week in and week out at the highest level.

The team, spearheaded by Revington, have conducted numerous and varied fundraising drives to ensure there was budget to ensure any valid high performance edge worth pursuing was catered for. Money was not going to be an excuse stopping them from getting to the top.

In early 2010 Mike Cooper and I were approached by Revington to develop the team mentally using the skills, techniques and processes we had developed for our company Coaching Unity. We had developed these processes through our training and research for our first book, In the zone with South Africa’s Sports Heroes, and then further refined them through our work with the South African hockey teams in 2009. Through Revington’s connection with South African hockey, he heard about the work we were doing and after some investigation and research he came to the conclusion that we could add value to the Green Machine.

So began a rewarding and stimulating partnership that resulted in 4 visits in 18 months, averaging a week at a time to work at a team and individual level. The support from the players and the staff has been outstanding; they continued to rise to the challenges that were identified on their way to their next level. It’s been challenging for this team to fine-tune their culture, to stretch themselves on a continuous basis with no guarantee of a big reward and to cement a learning culture of responsibly, openness and accountability – and they have done it all and more.

So with all the pieces in place: a committed and talented team, strong tactical and technical skills, high quality video analysis, outstanding support in physio, strength and conditioning and the ongoing mental skills development combined with a high performance culture; the big question was: Can Ireland rewrite history. In a word. Yes. Even if they didn’t win on Sunday, their meteoric rise in hockey form is worthy of recognition and respect and for the many thousands that attended this past week’s tournament and watched the final (including the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins) hockey has snuck into their hearts and captured their imagination – this teams character and desire to be the best they can be made their mark on all who witnessed their performances.

After the game as I looked into the tearful eyes in our team huddle, I was too upset to find the words to share with the team; if I was more composed I would have said I was very proud, very proud to be a part of the team, and my hope is that they use their strength to build on this, even if it hurts so very very badly. I believe this team will continue to rise up in world hockey and rewrite history, again. #GreenMachine

North Down 1-2 Banbridge

Sam Farson produced a late winner and a man of the match performance to send Banbridge through to semi finals of the Under 15 Ulster Cup.

The Under 15’s travelled to Comber last night to face a North Down side that had won 17:0 against Mossley in an earlier round. The Comber side also possessed two excellent Ulster Under 16 players in Peter McKibbon and Rowan Poots. Bann entered the game missing a number of key players, however started the game very brightly with early chances for Sam Farson & Peter McKnight (Son of Bann Legend Joe). The promising start didn’t yield any goals and North Down gradually started to get into their stride with McKibbon and Poots at the heart of everything; however Banns Josh Rowe and David Armstrong were more than equal to the challenge.

Bann regained control and started to look threatening every time they went forward with Reid, Farson and Brown all creating passing moves from deep that penetrated the home side defence. Robbie Scott and Peter McKnight were working tremendously hard and the latter got his reward, when a quick passing move ended at the feet of the Rathfriland man and he thundered low to the bottom corner. 0-1 Bann

Scott and McKnight continued to be threaten as Bann dominated the remaining minutes of the first half with Scott going extremely close with a great reverse shot from the centre of goal.

Half time: North Down 0-1 Banbridge

Bann started sluggishly in the second period and North Down exerted pressure on the locals goal but some strong defending from Rowe, Bennington, Watson and the impressive Hurst kept the comber side at bay. Bann gradually came alive with Farson and McKnight going very close to extending the lead, however with 10 minutes left North Down drew level with a great goal leaving Skillen in the Bann goal no chance.

Bann were stunned but the young side regrouped and surged up field and with eight minutes left Man of Match Sam Farson produced a stunning finish from wide right in the circle. Bann were not just happy to defend as they retained possession of the ball and subsequently frustrated the home sides fight back.

The final whistle sounded and ended a very competitive game of hockey with Bann happy to advance to the semi-finals later in the month.

Final score: North Down 1-2 Banbridge

Banbridge entertained Mossley last Saturday in their latest One1918 Premier League fixture. Having had to battle hard for three points in the corresponding away fixture the locals expected an equally difficult encounter.

From the start it was Bann who took the play to the visitors and forced them to defend deep in their half. With Dane Ward and Scott Caruth working hard to close down the defence it came as no real surprise when Bann took the lead.

Great control and awareness from Caruth on the right of the circle allowed him to draw the keeper and slip the ball to Ward who first timed his shot off the backboards.

Bann continued to pass the ball with more and more assurance, with February player of the month, Philip Brown having an excellent game in the centre of the park especially in attack. Midway through the half the locals extended their lead when after being awarded a penalty corner Caruth powered home a powerful drag flick to finish off a slick corner routine.

Mossley only managed to attack spoadically and any threat was capably dealt with by the home defence. Bann created several more half chances during the remainder of the half but where unable to add to their lead.

Half Time.Banbridge 2 Mossley 1

Mossley started the second period with more intent and forced the play with some slick passing. Bann slowly regained the upper hand and should have increaded their lead when several crosses from the right evaded the home forwarsd in front of goal.

Aaron Appleton in the home goal was called into action on several occasions in the second half and dealt capable with several shots from the edge of the circle. Mossley where give a lifeline fifteen minutes form the end of the game when following the award of a soft penalty corner James Lorimer scored with a direct flick.

Despite this setback Bann continued to press and several times were kept at bay by a combination of desperate defending and some poor finishing. With time running out the visitors tried to force an equaliser their play did not deserve and when they were awarded a penalty corner with two minutes left the home support held its breath. Once again Appleton was equal to the task with a stunning save low to his right. Bann immediately cleared their lines to hold out for another valuable three points.

Full Time Banbridge 2 Mossley 1

Team: A.Appleton, D.Carlisle, M.Bell, S.Forbes, S.Forbes, R. Beattie, P.Brown, P,Brown, C. Dowds, B.Cosgrove, D.Ward, S.Caruth, R.McCandless.

Bann have two league matches in the next seven days. They travel to Lough Moss on Wednesday night to play Annadale and return to Havelock on Saturday to entertain Civil Service.

Bann first eleven returned to winning ways on Saturday past when they comprehensively outplayed North Down at Comber Leisure Centre. Bann entered the game minus the injured Steven Dowds, Gareth Lennox, Hugh McShane and Ross McCandless.

Play started with Bann passing the ball around the park with ease not allowing the home team to get a foothold in the match indeed for long periods the home side where unable to touch the ball. It came as no surprise when Bann took the lead through Ross Beattie finished well from close in following some excellent approach play. Despite this reverse the home side continued to defend from the half way line allowing the Bann back four and midfield pick their passes. This approach allowed Bann to double the lead when Matthew Bell picked out Ben Cosgrove who easily beat his defender and cross from right to left to enable Scott Caruth to score at the back post.

Only for the home keeper the score could have been doubled as he made several quality saves from Caruth penalty corners. He was however left flat footed when Bann switched their fifth corner to allow Owen Magee to slide in to put the result beyond doubt before halftime.

Half time. North Down 0 Banbridge 3

At the start of the second half the home side finally decided to try and attack but any efforts were easily dealt with by Drew Carlisle, Matthew Bell, Stephen and Scott Forbes and as the half progressed Bann penned North Down into their own half with Dane Ward being a constant thorn to the home defence.

The Bann midfield of Peter and Philip Brown and Ross Beattie showed admirable composure keeping the ball moving and not resorting to running the ball at every opportunity.

Play petered out with Bann at one stage made more than thirty passes without a NorthDown player touching the ball.

All in all a very mature and composed display by a very young side and a result that will help build confidence as the team start to prepare for upcoming IHL and Irish Cup matches.

Full Time: North Down 0 Banbridge 3

Team: A.Appleton, D.Carlisle, M. Bell, S. Forbes, S.Forbes, R. Beattie, P.Brown, P.Brown, B. Cosgrove, D.Ward, S.Caruth, O.Magee, C. Dowds
