38 goals scored for Bann at the weekend!

The first matches after the festive break saw a massive 38 goals scored by Banbridge Hockey Club senior teams last weekend.

Bann Men’s 1st XI commenced their 2013 campaign travelling to Antrim to face a side struggling at the bottom end of the table and the team welcomed Fraser Mills into the squad for his debut after transferring from Annadale.  The team looked lethargic at times and were not helped by the heavy sand based surface but Bann secured maximum points winning 7-4 and retain their position at the top of Premier League.  The goals were scored by Scott Caruth ( 2 ), Stephen Dowds ( 3 ), Josh Moffett and Owen Magee.

The Men’s 2s retained their position at the top of Junior 1 with a comfortable 6-0 win against Civil Service.  Bann were without top goal scorer Ross McCandless and creative midfielder Diarmid Reay but had a full complement of school boys and dominated play throughout the game.  Bill Malcolmson, David McCracken , Ryan Bell, Rory Woods, Dougie Anderson ( 2 ) all got their names on the scoresheet.

Bann 3s were the highest scoring team at the weekend, putting 9 goals past Antrim 3s with Bill Malcolson grabbing a hatrick and Mark McCoy , Clarke Neville, John McCague , David Armstrong ( 2 ), Matthew Warnock also hitting the backboard.  Bann were 3-0 up at half time but didn’t stop at that putting away a further 6 goals in the second half.  Antrim were not totally out of the game and managed to score twice against this strong Bann team who put on one of their best performances to date this season.

Not to be outdone by the other men’s teams, the 4s secured a 4-2 win away against Campbellians with goals scored by Gareth Matthews, Mark Clydesdale, Peter McKnight and an OG.

The Ladies teams also had a good weekend with the 1s, 2s and 4s securing maximum points but unfortunately the Ladies 3s narrowly lost 2-1 to a strong Ards side at Havelock.

The Ladies 1st XI travelled to Ferris Park to take on league leaders Dromore and put on a great all round performance to win 2-0 with goals through Rachel Cairns and Alex Gordon.  Bann are currently sitting in second place in Senior 2 and this important result takes them within a point of Dromore who remain at the top.

After a few difficult games before the Festive break the Ladies 2s found their form again with a superb 6-1 win over North Down which keeps them still within reach of promotion.  Rosie Waddell, Alanna Magee and Helen Sawyers scored 2 each to secure the points.

The Ladies 4s playing their penultimate league game and also put on a top performance winning 3-1 at the Acadmey against Bangor 2s.  The scorers for Bann were Julie Pollock, Angela Cowan and Andrea Harrower.
